I wanted to report on a problem that has been around for a very long 
time. When printing ps files from AFS linux using lpr command to lp4, 
very frequently, more than one copy of the printout is generated.

The number of copies generated is not consistent. Sometimes it is 3. 
Sometimes it is 2. It can be 1 as well. The problem is quite 
reproducible. Essentially every ps printout I generate from the arxiv 
generates multiple copies. Printing from pdf is no better, as these 
files are first converted to ps before being sent to the printer anyway.

It appears as if for some reason the printer is not convinced that a job 
sent to it actually printed without an error, and attempts to re-print.

The problem appears to be system wide and I believe requires serious 
attention. At the very least, we are wasting paper and toner systemically.
